The meaning of a house in a dream is often representative of our body.  Our souls are encased within bodies, just as we live within a home.  Dreams of your house from childhood can indicate that part of you still feels and experiences things as you did when you were a child.  A house also symbolizes feelings of safety or lack of security within the world, just as if our bodies are in a safe versus a dangerous place.

Example:  A common recurring dream of people who were sexually or physically abused as children is a dream in which they are lost and can’t find their way home.  They keep searching, looking and walking, but can’t find their house.  Hence, their feelings of security and trust have been compromised by the abuse, and they are looking to feel that safety again but can’t seem to find it.  These individuals need to work through their abuse to regain their feelings of trust in the world.
